Trash Bag Closet Moving Hack: Eco-Hack #005

Trash Bag Closet Moving Hack: Eco-Hack #005

Now although the main tool needed for this hack is made out of plastic, I am sharing this hack that I’ve used for the past few years due to the ability to reuse said plastic at least two or more times after the initial use.

If you are a college student, or anyone who frequently moves from one place to another quite often, then you’ll understand the struggle of moving all your closet-hung items back and forth from each place you live.

I’ve been doing it on a yearly basis for the past three years, so I understand and know such pains.

But do you want to know how I’ve made this painful experience slightly less terrible?

Trash bags.

Yep, those plastic things that we normally use once to throw away again. The things we throw below our sinks and forget about until someone has let the trash bin pile up with stinky things. Trash bags have been the savior to my annual moving problem, and here’s how:

Clothing from my resale store, neatly packed and ready for transportation.

By using trash bags as closet-moving bags,

you’re able to move lots of items, but also keep them on the hanger so that it’s super easy to place them in a new closet!

I’ll be the first to admit, this method can be frustrating and the bags are awkward to handle, but this has saved me so much time and space when moving, that it is seriously worth it!

I wouldn’t write a whole blog post about it if I did not think it was beneficial for all to know…

Here’s how I do it:

  1. Grab a handful of items out of your closet. (There is no right or wrong number).
  2. Lay them on a flat surface, with the hangers stacked.
  3. Grab a trash bag, and gently scoop the bottom pieces of the fabric stack into the bag.
  4. Slowly shimmy each part of the clothing pieces into the bag, like sleeves and long skirt pieces.
  5. When the band of the bag reaches the hangers, gently push the curve of the hanger into the bag, leaving only the hooks out.
  6. Once you’ve got everything shoved in past the band of the bag, grab all the hooks and line them up.
  7. Take one side of the band strap, and pull it from one side to the other, encasing all the hooks inside.
  8. Do the same to the other side of the band, encasing all hooks going the opposite direction.
  9. And you’re done!
  10. When ready to unbag the clothing, simply undo the band straps, and grab all hangers (sandwich them in-between your hands) to put on the pole rack of your new closet!

Here’s the best part of this semi-eco-hack:

You can reuse the trash bags for their original purpose!

They’ll likely be a bit stretched out, and may have a hole or two, but they are still perfectly usable in your trash bin!

Or if you have lots of trash from your recent move, these are perfect for clearing clutter quickly!

Whatever use you can think of, there is very little reason to throw these bags away after moving clothing in them! Especially since we did not cut the bottoms of the bags out like some people may suggest.

By refraining from that idea, you are keeping your clothes contained and clean, and are also able to save money on trash bags and moving supplies by converting the two-into-one!

We may not be able to cut plastics out of our life completely, but giving them extra life and purpose can help!

I hope this simple hack is super helpful for your next move, and please do remember to keep and reuse the plastic as much as possible. As my dad, a.k.a. my personal moving companion, always says, “Don’t throw them away, they cost money too!”.

Please leave a comment below if you have used this method before, how was your experience and/or challenges? Let’s live and learn from each other! ❤️

Until next time, keep doing your best! Sending lots of love, and care for you and your loved ones!
